Overview
My family acquired this 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster at the beginning of 2022. Over the past four years, we have worked to restore the vehicle and bring it back to running and driving condition. This project has given me extensive hands-on experience working with vintage automotive systems and mechanical components.
Engine
One of the largest projects I undertook was removing the vehicle’s inline-six engine and preparing it for a professional rebuild. To remove the engine, we disconnected the transmission and clutch and removed the necessary engine accessories, including the fuel pump, exhaust manifold, ignition coil, vacuum advance system, and starter.
Once the rebuilt engine returned from the machine shop, we reinstalled it in the vehicle and reconnected the engine accessories and related systems. This process provided valuable experience with engine removal, mechanical assembly, and working with interconnected automotive components.

Getting it Ready to Drive
In addition to the engine rebuild, we replaced and serviced several other components to prepare the vehicle for the road, including:
- Fuel pump
- Starter
- Alternator
- Radiator
- Carburetor
- Harmonic balancer
- Door springs
Working through these repairs required hands-on mechanical assembly, component replacement, and troubleshooting to bring the vehicle back into reliable operating condition.

Back On The Road
Shortly after reinstalling the rebuilt engine and completing the necessary repairs, this 80-year-old coupe returned to the road. Seeing the vehicle run and drive again was a rewarding result of several years of restoration work.
